Malaysia’s First Serrated Safety Grating Transformer Bay

Safety grating walkways, chequer-plate trench covers and a custom aluminium sunshield, measured, cut to size and modelled by Array Metal

This transformer bay is the first in Malaysia to be floored with safety grating in place of conventional bar grating. For this high-voltage substation, Array Metal delivered a complete, purpose-engineered package: safety grating walkways, chequer-plate trench covers and a custom aluminium sunshield, measured, designed, cut and modelled by our own team from site survey to handover.

Bar grating has long been the default around transformers, but its flat bars offer little grip once they are wet, oily or dusty. Our safety grating is formed from a single sheet into a plank profile with raised, serrated perforations that grip underfoot in every direction, in rain, oil or dust. The perforations shed rainwater and yard debris straight through, so walkways stay drained and clear. The formed planks are lighter to handle than bar panels, sit flush with no loose cross bars to catch tools or heels, and are galvanised for a long service life outdoors.

Around the transformer, the grating forms part of a complete floor system. Steel edge frames lock every panel to the plinth line and hold it flush with the gravel yard. Where cable trenches and drains run beneath, removable chequer-plate covers and lift-out grating panels give maintenance crews quick access without breaking the walkway.

In front of the transformer tank stands an aluminium sunshield that we designed and custom-fitted for this bay. Shaped around the tank, radiators and pipework, its bolted panels shade the transformer from the tropical sun while ventilation slots keep air moving behind it. Aluminium keeps the shield light, corrosion-free and easy to take down for inspection.

This was never a supply-only job. Our team measured the bay on site, offered every panel cut to size, and modelled the full installation before fabrication, so frames, planks, plates and shield panels went straight into place. The result was a fast installation with minimal labour on site and a clean, precise finish around live high-voltage equipment.
